The true history of poker is still being discussed. One of the first known games, which included bets, card rankings and "bluffing" was the German game by the name of Pochspiel from the 15th century. Moreover, poker is very similar to the Persian game of "As Nas," which was mentioned for the first time in writing around the 1890s. Yet, around the 1990s, many historians started to challenge this explanation.

As a matter of fact, there is evidence of the fact that the French game by the name of "poque," which apparently is similar to poker, was being played in the same area, from which poker originates. The name "poker" is said to either have originated from the Irish game "Poca" (which is also called "Pocket"), or from the French game "poque," which originates from the German game of "Pochen." However, these theories are still not completely stable, and consequently, it is still not exactly clear, where poker originated from.
